Widdess is an independent clothing label based in Ponsonby, Auckland. Their focus is on beautiful fabrics and simple styles. The use of silks, cottons, wools and only natural textiles is important to them. Widdess is proudly designed and manufactured in Auckland since 1996. It’s full steam ahead at Shipshape and The Secret Garden as we head into labour weekend 2016. There’s been some changes afoot with the addition of another container that now doubles as exhibition space. This weekend we have two local artists – Shane Walker, painter and Andrew Killick, potter (laughing pottery). Shane is well known at Waihi Beach and more recently for his amazing murals on some of our buildings, the latest being the exisiting container at Shipshape – check it out below! THE SECRET GARDEN Is open from 8am to 4pm Saturday/Sunday/Monday. The Pod will be serving coffee, superfood smoothies, fresh salads, rolls and a few sweet treats with Sheryl from The huia tree at the helm. There is live music on Saturday morning from locals – Paper Road. SHIPSHAPE Is open from 9am to 5pm Saturday/Sunday and 9am to 4pm on Monday. We are stocked up on all new seasons clothing from Kowtow, Elk, Nyne, Just Another Fisherman, Standard Issue, Coop, Ariele Mermin, Mesop and more… Looking forward to an exciting weekend! Travelling to Bali is a wonderful experience – the people, the culture, the food, the chaos inspires me. On this trip we based ourselves in Seminyak for 18 days, it rained for about an hour in the whole 18 days!! The rest of the time the days were hot and the nights balmy – what a treat. It’s hard work though, days are long and tiring foraging amongst an endless collection of outstanding makers and their wares. But it’s always a thrill to find the perfect item, by the end of the trip I had found literally thousands of ‘perfect’ items. In another few weeks we will have more excitement as the container arrives and we open it. Our friends in Bali are busy sorting and packing right now! I hope these images give you some insight into the ‘behind the scenes’ of our experience. Jayne.

Well it’s been an incredible journey so far and I’m starting to make headway with my little boutique business at Waihi Beach. I have met many wonderful customers in the last few months – thank you so much for your support and we now have some gorgeous brands in stock. I am in awe of my suppliers with their unbending attention to detail not only in their own branding but also in their customer service and production process. I very proudly stock such names as Kowtow, Arielle Mermin, Just another fisherman, Jas Sparrow, Elk, Nancy Bird, Ricochet, Stand Issue, Seargent Pretty, I love ugly and more… they have all inspired me to create my own beautiful brand which today lead me to the gorgeous printhouse of Magpie Press in Whakatane who are specialist letterpress printers. Letterpress is a very ‘hands on’, traditional method of printing that is creates an ‘imprint’ in the paperstock giving a gorgeous tactile feel. Thankfully the shipshape logo transfers beautifully in such a method. You can be sure we will have more letterpress items in the near future. I have always been fascinated by any handcrafted, artisan process particularly with my background in jewellery making. I hope you get a sense of joy in the images that we took today as we visited Magpie Press and their 1960’s beauty – Hildegarde.
